Sounds like good advice...
The issue on my end is as a way to quickly isolate spam from legitimate and useful messages
Why not apply your advice to this very problem? Experience has shown that the best approach is to first remove all the email *known* to be good ( i.e. not spam) from the stream and then apply your spam filters (or spamassassin or spamkiller or spamboinker or...) to the remainder. Less work for you, less work for your filters. I chose smartlist as my listmanager (quite some time ago now) because it allowed be to configure my lists the way I want them to be and anyone else who has the software has that same opportunity. I did spend some time learning the background to some of the choices though so I could make informed decisions about those setup options. Since I work on a unix platform I have a much wider choice of tools to manage my email than others might have so I am free to rewrite the subject lines on my incoming email (should I choose to) and add all sorts of things. Perhaps if your email is proving to be a management problem you might want to consider moving to a platform that gives you more options to help you get it under control. SpamKiller polls the mail server before my client does and weeds out the spam. Given that, for example, you sent your response e:mail to both the list and to me, I now have two copies. The smartlist directed reply automatically gets accepted because it comes from a "friend". The second copy, or a copy CCd to the list would get put into the SpamKiller accepted mail because of the header information, but it appears there along side other messages which the spam filter couldn't detect, but which are in fact, spam. As I've said, the smartlist mailing list is the only list out of 6 that I subscribe to which does not put a tag in the subject line, and given the number of e:mail messages that were sent directly to me on this subject, I can only assume that many other people would prefer it as well. But alas, I don't run this list, I only receive its benefits, so I guess I (and everyone else) have to take the coal along with the sugar. On Thu, 20 Feb 2003 08:20:13 -0500, Richard G. I have no idea how to respond to something like this, and so I won't. I have explained how you can easily prioritize your mail, filing SmartList-list messages into their own area (hint: read your manual) without requiring some silly Yahoo-ish subject munge, and instead you'd rather argue that you want the list owner to do it FOR you to keep you from having to lift a finger to solve your non-existant "problem." If you really prefer having that nonsense in the Subject: header field, it is trivial for you to add it YOURSELF, on YOUR COPIES ONLY, using procmail (which anyone on this list, and using SmartList to operate mailing lists, should be comfortable working in). That way you get what you want, and we don't need to hear about it. (I am quit with this topic, since it's clear you're going to argue no matter what, and I don't intend wasting any more of my life on this. But if you do feel the need to reply so others on the list are forced to respond, at least have the decency to stop top-posting, and quote only for context. I realize that will, again, require actually reading your manual to change the default, so I don't expect it to happen, but it was worth a try...) Charlie Summers
