Hello, My name is Gunes Inan, I am currently a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts and am planning to continue my studies in RWTH Aachen by the next Fall. I already got an admission from the faculty of mechanical engineering, and I am writing you to inquire about the degree programs in English department for my wife. My wife received her bachelor's degree in English Literature (Istanbul University, Turkey) in 2002, and for the last two years, she has been working as an English teacher in a community collage in Turkey. She is very interested in pursuing her post graduate studies in RWTH Aachen and we would like to get more information about the eligibility criteria . First, I would like to ask if she can apply for a doctoral degree with her bachelor's degree, or is it required to have a magister or a master's degree to get an admission for the doctoral program. Second, we would like to know the level of German language the department requires from the international students. She has intermediate level German, once she comes to Germany, she will definitely learn it much faster than she has been doing in Turkey. I wonder if the department shows flexibility in letting students improve their German, say in the first year of their studies. Thank you for your interest, Regards Gunes Inan Graduate Researcher University of Massachusetts 285 Old Westport Road North Dartmouth, MA 02790, USA

Hello, I'm sorry, but we can't help you much. For these kind of question you need to contact the International Office. As far as I know the question if a bachelor degree is sufficient to start a doctoral degree depends on whether there's an agreememt between RWTH and the university at which the degree was obtained. The International Office should know. The same holds true for the German language requierment. Normally, students who want to study at RWTH need to pass a DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für Hochschule or something the like)-exam. Otherwise they cannot enroll the university but need to do German courses before and take the exam. Whether this rule also applies for post-graduate students I don't know. Same advice here: ask the International Office. Their email-address is: international@zhv.rwth-aachen.de I hope this helped you at least a little bit. Cheers, Britta Weber (Seniorat Anglistik)
