Can Be Used Again Without Restrictions

--- English version below ---
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
bitte beachten Sie folgende Meldung der Regionetz:
Trinkwasser kann wieder uneingeschränkt verwendet werden
29.01.2021
Da nun an drei Tagen in Folge alle Proben
Seit Dienstag intensive Nachbeprobungen

Dear members of RWTH Aachen University,
Please note the following announcement issued by Regionetz:
Drinking Water Can Be Used Again Without Restrictions
January 29, 2021
According to Regionetz, the samples analyzed earlier today are all harmless.
"We are very relieved that the results that we expected have been
confirmed," says Rudolf Roß, head of STAWAG's Water Division and managing
director of WAG. The bottom line is that only one sample taken in the area
of the Schmithof Waterworks showed an extremely small amount of bacteria.
This means that the public health departments precautionary requirement to
boil drinking water can be lifted with immediate effect.
"Based on the results now available, we can say that drinking water in
Aachen was safe at all times. Nevertheless, it was and is right to issue a
boil water notice at the slightest suspicion of contamination, because the
safety of our drinking water supply is our highest priority," says Roß.
The public health department of the Städteregion has confirmed that today's
samples were also harmless. Since all samples have been safe for three days
in a row, the requirement to boil tap water before consumption can now be
lifted. As the drinking water has always been of a consistently high
quality, no purification measures need to be carried out on private or
commercial filter systems.
Intense Sampling Since Tuesday
On Tuesday evening, during a routine check, a sample in the area of the
Schmithof Waterworks was found to contain a small amount of E. coli
bacteria. All other samples taken previously, simultaneously, and
subsequently at many measuring points in Aachen as well as around and in
Schmithof were clean and safe. Furthermore, all safety systems in the filter
and treatment plants at the waterworks were fully operative.
"Based on the internal and external investigations so far, we think it is
most likely that there was a mix-up of samples. We are very sorry to have
caused this inconvenience to residents. We greatly honor your trust in
Aachen's drinking water," Roß emphasizes. There has not been a similar case
in Aachen for over 30 years. To ensure that this continues, all internal
processes are currently being reviewed and quality assured.
Information on Water Quality Monitoring and Treatment
Samples are taken at various points in the water network and at transfer
stations. Additionally, in Schmithof, as in all other waterworks, the water
from the groundwater facilities as well as all treatment, filter, and
disinfection stages and the treated drinking water are continuously
monitored by sampling procedures. The various filter and disinfection stages
stop possible contamination and ensure that only clean and safe drinking
water reaches the water mains network at all times after treatment.
