Shell accounts that hosted procmail used to be routine. Can anyone recommend a reliable host (preferably US) with a shell account or vps that allows procmail processing with sendmail prior to pop retrieval? Sales departments no longer seem to know what that even means. I am currently using a vps at dreamhost because shell accounts on shared hosting were removed, and email support has continued to be further withdrawn, along with all too frequent email outages and poor support. I can still automatically forward email to my vps for procmail processing for logging, archiving, filtering, and forwarding email elsewhere for safety and reporting spam reports to spamcop.net via sendmail, but I only have pop access to the general mail server prior to my procmail processing. And support for anything less than routine continues to decline at dreamhost. I have personal websites and ftp on my vps, but don't have to use the same host for both that and email.

I dont know just shell account providers, but Hetzner provided FreeBSD servers to a friend. Probably various other Unix available too. https://www.hetzner.com/sb 28 EURO/month Server auction, ie cheaper with fixed pre used pre configured. Web Interfaces in English German Russian? https://www.hetzner.com/unternehmen/ueber-uns $30 for VPS @ pair.com = 25.4 Euros http://www.berklix.com/~jhs/rates/ Cheers, -- Julian Stacey http://berklix.com/jhs/ http://stolenvotes.uk

Eskimo.com sounds just like what you're looking for. Bob's been hosting the site since the late 1980s, very Unix/Linux/Procmail friendly. Wrote my own spam filters using procmail+sed back before Spamassassin and friends existed. Shell acct comes with two free Smartlist mailing lists (basically a wrapper around procmail). Very friendly, very secure. I feel lucky to have this rare resource. jimo

I think you're unlikely to find anyone who will still let you run your own scripts on their mail server. It's easy enough to set up Postscript on your own VPS but then you have to do all your own spam filtering and deal with the often poor sending reputation of VPS networks. How about a slightly modified VPS approach, pick whatever mail operator you want, run fetchmail on your VPS to collect the mail from their server to your VPS and run procmail there. If you want to handle your own POP or IMAP clients, running your own copy of dovecot is very easy and doesn't have the reputation issues since nobody but you has access to it.
I know you were asking last September, and you already got a couple of replies, but still … I would like to recommend my supplier's services, but that comes with a huge restriction: this only helps people, that are familiar with German. but still … – maybe some people may read this and may like my recommendation. I have been using the services of "Hostsharing eG" (a "co-op" by German law) for a couple of years, and I am very, very satisfied with their services. * https://wiki.hostsharing.net/index.php?title=Procmail * https://www.hostsharing.net/features/procmail/
