I am not able to reproduce the problem, since on my Windows laptop I can run the compass 2.3 VM using VMWare 6.0.3. The VM is 32-bit, so your target PC Operating System should be OK. Could you first double check that the VM was correctly downloaded and unpacked? If so, the only other suggestion we have is to try a different client, e.g. Virtualbox (https://www.virtualbox.org/) and use the .ovf format in the distribution.
