RUSSELL’S ORPHANED “SOLDIER” FINDS A HOME WITH CINEMA LIBRE DISTRIBUTION AND ROBERT GREENWALD The Collaboration of “Soldiers Pay” and “Uncovered: The War on Iraq” To Create a Powerful, Political Force Across the Country September 22, 2004/Los Angeles, CA – After Warner Bros. called off plans to distribute David O. Russell’s new anti-war documentary “SOLDIERS PAY”, which was scheduled to be screened this fall with the re-release of his 1999 Gulf War film, “Three Kings”, Cinema Libre Studio has stepped in to distribute the film in conjunction with “UNCOVERED: THE WAR ON IRAQ”. The political doc double bill makes a powerful duo, complimenting each other with strong arguments about the consequences of war and the lies that were told to get there. Documentary filmmaker Robert Greenwald has welcomed Russell’s 35-minute film, “SOLDIERS PAY”, a directorial collaboration between Russell, Tricia Regan and Juan Carlos Zaldîvar, to play in theaters across the U.S. with Greenwald’s critically-acclaimed political doc “UNCOVERED: THE WAR ON IRAQ”. In addition, the film will be included as part of the “UNCOVERED” DVD release, due out early next month. “I am excited to participate in this double bill,” expresses Robert Greenwald, “that serves the audience. Both films take you inside the government speaking out about distortion of information, and David Russell’s powerful personal story of the toll war takes on those who have to fight it.” “SOLDIERS PAY” is a $207, 000 doc, directed by David O. Russell, Tricia Regan and Juan Carlos Zaldîvar, featuring interviews with Iraqi refugees, human-rights officials and veterans of the current war on Iraq. Warner Bros. was planning on screening the film in theaters along with the re-release of “Three Kings” in order to promote the reissue of a new special-edition DVD. After scrapping the short doc, Warner Bros gave Russell back the rights to “SOLDIERS PAY”, not wanting to get involved with a “political opinion” doc before of the November election. “I’m very, very pleased that Soldiers Pay will be released side-by-side with the work of Robert Greenwald at this time – he’s an important filmmaker,” expressed David O. Russell. Cinema Libre is proud to continue its tradition of providing an outlet to the political voices of filmmakers. With David O. Russell’s patriotic film about the terrible costs of war, Cinema Libre and Greenwald hope to instill awareness within audiences about the dangers of being mislead into war, and the toll wars take on those who must fight them. Greenwald and Cinema Libre Distribution initially partnered to the theatrically release Greenwald’s doc. “OUTFOXED: RUPERT MURDOCH’S WAR ON JOURNALISM” that opened August 6th in theaters across the U.S. Soon afterwards, the duo collaborated on the release of “UNCOVERED”, a second film in a Greenwald quartet of docs about the political climate in the U.S. Cinema Libre Distribution and Greenwald recently announced the October 1st launch of “UNCONSTITUTIONAL” and “UNPRECEDENTED” into theaters, as a double bill. While political films are considered a “risk’ for the Majors, Cinema Libre and Greenwald saw this opportunity as a suitable collaboration of like-minded independent voices. “I think it is essential that cinema provokes an emotion with any audience,” states Philippe Diaz, Head of Cinema Libre Studio. “We created Cinema Libre to provide independent filmmakers with a partner in producing and distributing daring and provocative films. We are extremely pleased to be associated with a group of talented people.” Starting Thursday September 23rd,“SOLDIERS PAY” will screen before “UNCOVERED: THE WAR ON IRAQ” at the Roxie in San Francisco and on Friday, September 24th at the Oaks in Berkeley. The double bill will then move to select cities across the country.
